I think part of it is that people had to get used to IV's handling. Remember, people were coming off of the super-arcadey handling of San Andreas or maybe Saints Row 2. But after people played IV for awhile, they usually noticed how robust the physics were, and that it was really damn satisfying to pull off stunts because they actually needed a good degree of driving skill.
